As expected last Friday, July 24 brought with it a new government program for getting older, less fuel efficient cars off the road and a new minimum wage rate.

The CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) program kicked off on Friday with a bang as car dealerships across the country offered government sponsored financial incentives to new car buyers who were willing to trade in their 'clunkers for cash.' Many car manufacturers are even offering additional financial incentives to car buyers on top of the government sponsored program. The CARS program will not last forever though. Currently the program is only funded until November 1, 2009 or until the money allotted for it is used.

Also on Friday, the newest minimum wage rate hike went into affect as planned. The rate previously was $6.55, but now is $7.25 per hour. According to the US Dept of Labor, 29 states will be affected by this change. Not sure if your state will be affected? The Dept of Labor can help.

I got interested in the subject and found a lot of additional information concerning it. It seems to be rather useful. In particular, that the CARS program achieved the objectives set out by Congress to increase automotive sales and aid the environment. In just a few short weeks of sales, nearly 680,000 older vehicles were replaced by new, more fuel-efficient vehicles. The nation's economy benefited immediately from this stimulus program, which caused a distinct upward movement in GDP and created or saved tens of thousands of jobs at a very critical time in the recovery process. It is just incredible.

The CARS program was quite a success last year so I hope everyone got their old car smashed and got the ticket to buy a new one.
