Health Care Reform Heats Up PDF Print E-mail
Floral Industry Legislative Issues - Health Care Reform

Health care reform continues to pick up speed this week. The President used his weekly radio address to talk about passing health care reform and the details of Sen. Kennedy's (D-Mass.), proposal are coming out. Kennedy, Chairman of the HELP Committee proposes to provide health care for all. Not surprisingly, Kennedy's plan includes:

  • A mandate for individuals to purchase insurance.
  • A mandate for employers to provide insurance for employees.
  • A provision that employers who did not provide a minimum amount of (undefined) coverage for their employees would have to make a payment on behalf of the employees ("pay or play").
  • The creation of a public plan to compete with private insurers.
  • A tax credit (not defined) for small employers that pay a certain percentage of the employee's health care premiums.

Nine Senate Republicans have written (click here for the letter) to President Obama outlining concern over a public health insurance plan and implored him to focus on areas of common ground.

More to come!
