Grassroot Efforts - Advocacy Tips and Tricks
Communication between people, groups, customers and constituents is consistently evolving. Your lawmakers have made constant adjustments to keep up with the ever-changing way their constituents receive their news. Now, don't get worried if you aren't tweeting every hour or checking your Facebook friends' status, but you should begin to consider the benefits of this new technology.

Every representative and senator has their own official website. These sites are the starting place for any inquires you have about your lawmaker. Have questions about their stance on small business? Check their website. Interested in their position on immigration reform? That is there too. Do you just want to find out a little bit of background on your lawmaker, and check what industry they worked in before getting into office? You'll have that at your fingertips as well.

Some representatives even have exclusive e-newsletters that you must subscribe to through their website only. Town hall meetings are often announced only on their website or through their newsletter. Memorial Day recess is a popular time for Town Hall meetings, so check online to find out if you have one in your area. Contacting your lawmaker is made easy as well, because most sites allow you to directly e-mail that member from their site.

Start your research at www.house.gov to find your representative or www.senate.gov to find your senators.

Thanks for these ideas. Since I became involved in government relations with SAF I have been able to develop relationships with my Senators and my Congressman by "staying connected" to them via personal vsits to their offices, letters, emails and even a few phone conversations. I am on their mailing lists and get a monthly newsletter updating me on issues they are working on, their positions on issues, etc. I highly reccommend that you try this too. Participating in our democracy is a privilage and your right. Take advantage of new technologies that make it very easy.

Thanks for adding this great feedback Kevin. The expansion of the internet has really enabled you to stay connected with a click of a button. You can get information directly into your e-mail inbox and have it all right there in front of you. Exploring your lawmaker's website is just the start though. Feel free to send them an email message with your opinion on an issue. Constituents have the most pull over how the people you vote for make decisions on Cap Hill.

Congratulations Kevin for having the Inaugural comment!!
